After years of political wrangling, redesigns, budget debates and community frustration, Dunedin has finally seen the first visible sign that its long-promised new hospital is becoming real. Today, the first vertical structural steel was installed on the former Cadbury site — a moment Health Minister Simeon Brown calls “the most significant milestone yet” in the project’s troubled history.

For Dunedin locals, the sight of steel columns rising from the ground is more than construction progress. It’s proof that after countless delays, the city’s new inpatient building is no longer a concept on paper but a physical structure climbing into the skyline.

“One of the first things I did as Health Minister was give the people of Dunedin certainty that this Government would build their new hospital,” Brown said. “After years of talk, we signed the contract last year, construction got under way, and now the building itself is going up.”

The inpatient building will eventually stand 11 storeys high, designed around modern patient flow, clinical efficiency and improved recovery environments. For a region that has endured repeated setbacks — from design cuts to cost escalations — the promise of a purpose-built facility feels long overdue.

The steel installation follows major groundwork by CPB Contractors, clearing the way for vertical construction. More than 15,200 pieces of steel will be erected, with 11,000 tonnes transported to Dunedin by road and sea — around 550 truckloads in total. Fabrication has been underway in Auckland and Christchurch, showcasing New Zealand manufacturing muscle.

Brown says the project will boost jobs and economic activity across Otago and Southland, with benefits flowing through local supply chains.

But Dunedin residents know the timeline well: practical completion is scheduled for late 2030, with patients expected to be admitted in 2031. After years of delay, some remain cautious — but today’s steel signals momentum that can finally be seen, not just promised.

“For generations to come, patients across Dunedin and the wider Otago and Southland regions will be cared for in this hospital,” Brown said. “Today that commitment is taking shape in steel.”
