Conservative Party leader Helen Houghton has confirmed she will contest the Tāmaki electorate in the upcoming General Election, pitching herself as a representative shaped by real‑world experience rather than political pedigree.

“Tāmaki deserves a representative who understands the challenges facing everyday New Zealanders and who is prepared to work tirelessly on their behalf,” Houghton said, announcing her candidacy.

Her campaign message centres on a simple contrast: lived experience versus lifelong politics. Houghton’s background spans teaching, completing a law degree, directing a charitable trust, and running her own business — a mix she says has grounded her understanding of the pressures facing families, classrooms, and small enterprises.

“I understand the importance of quality education because I have taught in our classrooms. I understand the pressures facing small businesses because I run one. I understand the importance of justice because I have completed my law degree and advocate for people seeking fairness,” she said.

Houghton argues voters are increasingly looking for representatives who have “lived the realities facing New Zealanders”, not those who treat Parliament as a career destination. “Politics should be about service, not status,” she said.

Education will be her flagship issue. Houghton says New Zealand must return to fundamentals: disciplined classrooms, high expectations, and academic achievement ahead of ideology. “It is time to restore a culture of excellence,” she said, calling for effective teaching to be placed back at the centre of every school.

Her campaign will also focus on supporting families, encouraging economic growth, reducing bureaucracy, strengthening community safety, and ensuring Tāmaki has a strong voice in Parliament.

“My journey has taught me that where you began does not determine where you can go,” Houghton said. “Every New Zealander deserves the opportunity to succeed through hard work, responsibility, and aspiration.”
