Labour’s election meeting in Wellington took an unexpected turn last night when volunteers were forced to form a protective barrier around health spokesperson Ayesha Verrall after a group of anti‑vaccination protesters attempted to disrupt the event. The incident, first reported by The Post, unfolded as Verrall was speaking to attendees and quickly escalated into shouting, accusations, and attempts to interrupt the meeting.

Chris Hipkins addressed the situation this morning, saying he had spoken with Verrall and was encouraged by the strong support she received from the audience inside the venue. He noted that those present made it clear they rejected the protesters’ claims and wanted the event to continue.

Hipkins said Labour would not be deterred from holding public meetings, despite the actions of what he described as a “very small minority” with strong anti‑science views. He emphasised that these individuals did not represent the “vast bulk” of New Zealanders and that the party intended to keep engaging with communities throughout the campaign.

“We’re not going to stop getting out and about,” Hipkins said, adding that elections were always “heated” and occasionally attracted people intent on disruption. While acknowledging the potential for confrontational behaviour, he stressed Labour would continue answering questions and speaking directly with voters.

Footage posted online by former ACT marketing director John Ansell showed protesters accusing Verrall of “mass murdering people”, while police at the event were heckled and accused of being “in league with the mass murderers”. The video captured the intensity of the confrontation, though officers maintained order and the meeting ultimately proceeded.

The incident highlights the increasingly charged atmosphere surrounding health policy and pandemic‑related issues, even as New Zealand moves further from the height of Covid‑19 debates. Labour says it remains focused on its campaign message — and won’t allow fringe disruption to derail it.
