National’s Chris Bishop has received an unexpected electoral boost after New Zealand First leader Winston Peters publicly urged Hutt South voters to back the senior National minister in the electorate race.

Speaking at a packed public meeting in Lower Hutt, Peters told supporters their electorate vote should go to Bishop, describing him as “a cut above” the average MP and warning Parliament would lose an experienced politician if he failed to retain the seat.

The endorsement is significant because Bishop’s political future may depend on holding Hutt South. Current polling suggests National’s party vote could leave even high-ranking list MPs vulnerable if they do not secure an electorate seat.

Peters emphasised his comments were not an endorsement of the National Party itself, but rather recognition of Bishop’s contribution to Parliament and Cabinet, particularly his work on Resource Management Act reforms.

The move is unusual given New Zealand First is running its own candidate in Hutt South. However, Peters argued voters should separate their electorate and party votes, while continuing to encourage support for New Zealand First on the party vote.

Bishop welcomed the support, saying he would continue campaigning for every vote until election day.

The endorsement comes as Hutt South emerges as one of the country’s most closely watched electoral contests. Labour’s Ginny Andersen is again challenging Bishop in a race that could have implications extending beyond the electorate itself.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has also placed considerable emphasis on Hutt South during the campaign. At an earlier Lower Hutt public meeting, Luxon praised Bishop’s commitment to the region, describing him as a dedicated local representative, while Bishop reaffirmed his support for the government’s programme.

For voters, the contest is increasingly attracting national attention. The seat is no longer just a battle between National and Labour candidates. It has become a test of strategic voting, coalition politics, and the value other political leaders place on retaining experienced MPs in Parliament.

Whether Peters’ rare cross-party endorsement translates into votes remains to be seen, but it has ensured Chris Bishop’s campaign remains one of the most closely watched stories of Election 2026.
