‘Why Would You Act Like You Are Still for Sale?’

Riaan Swiegelaar is urging Christians to look beyond Halloween’s costumes and candy and consider what they are welcoming into their homes.

In a recent interview with US-based Charisma Media the former South African Satanic Church leader described Halloween decorations and occult imagery as invitations to spiritual activity. His challenge to Christians centered on the price Jesus paid for their freedom.

“If you are bought with that blood, why would you act like you are still for sale?” Swiegelaar asked

A warning about what enters the home

Swiegelaar argued that objects associated with death and the occult carry significance beyond their appearance.

“Certain things that are considered to be loaded objects because of their creational purpose will open doors to demonic activity,” he said.

He specifically identified carved pumpkins with candles inside, describing the display as “a little lighthouse, a magnet for the demonic.”

Swiegelaar also made a controversial claim about Halloween candy.

“The whole thing about candy and children connected to Halloween is about sweetening their blood,” he said.

He provided no historical documentation or other corroborating evidence for that claim in the interview excerpt.

His broader warning focused on Christians dismissing participation as harmless dressing up while overlooking the spiritual associations he attributes to the holiday.

Making the occult look innocent

Swiegelaar connected his concerns about Halloween to children’s exposure to occult content through entertainment and social media.

He argued that repeated exposure to occult imagery and practices can desensitize young people to their spiritual dangers.

“So, there’s very obvious satanic things happening in terms of rituals being performed at concerts,” he said, also pointing to readings and ritual instructions online.

“And we have to understand that children are watching this.”

He described Halloween as another avenue for presenting witches and demons as fun and innocent. He urged Christians to take those concerns to God.

“I mean, don’t believe me. Spend time with God.”

The blood of Jesus changes everything

Discussing his account of occult practices, Swiegelaar described blood sacrifices as offerings used to negotiate with demonic powers.

But his testimony turned toward the difference he experienced after encountering Jesus.

“There’s no comparison,” he said. “The one doesn’t even compare to the other.”

Swiegelaar also challenged Christians to examine whether they want a relationship with Jesus or only relief from their problems.

“They seek the healing, but they’re not seeking the healer,” he said. “They’re seeking deliverance, but they’re not seeking the deliverer.”

Pray for the people caught in darkness

Swiegelaar urged Christians to respond through worship and intercession, including prayer for people participating in occult rituals.

“The devil cannot stand worship, whether it is in song or praising God for his goodness,” he said.

He credited the prayers of thousands of Christians with his own encounter with Jesus, recalling that he had neither Christian friends nor an interest in attending church.

“I didn’t even know I’m looking for Christ,” he said. “I thought I was happy and I was successful.”

His appeal was to pray for others to encounter the same love that changed his life.

“And remember our war is not against flesh and blood,” Swiegelaar said.

“So, pray that those people will have a Jesus encounter.”
