New Zealand\u2019s tourism sector is continuing its remarkable post\u2011pandemic resurgence, with new data showing the industry pumping billions more into the economy and supporting thousands of additional jobs nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest Tourism Satellite Account from Stats NZ reports total tourism expenditure of $46.6 billion<\/strong> for the year ending March 2025 \u2014 up $1.5 billion (3.3%)<\/strong> on the previous year. International visitors were a major driver, lifting their spending by $1.2 billion (7%)<\/strong> to $18.1 billion<\/strong>, in line with a 4.3% rise in overseas arrivals<\/strong> to 3,320,687 people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston<\/strong> says the figures confirm the sector\u2019s growing strength and its importance to New Zealand\u2019s economic momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTourism employment increased by 2.8 percent \u2014 that\u2019s 8,874 more people \u2014 bringing the total to 327,888,\u201d she says. \u201cThat means one in nine New Zealanders now works in tourism or hospitality, showing just how vital this industry is to jobs and opportunity across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Tourism remains New Zealand\u2019s second\u2011largest export<\/strong>, contributing 7.7 percent of GDP<\/strong> \u2014 a level consistent with its long\u2011standing role as one of the country\u2019s economic pillars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upston says the continued growth reflects both the appeal of New Zealand\u2019s landscapes and experiences, and the Government\u2019s focus on making it easier for visitors to come here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether it\u2019s our natural beauty, warm hospitality or world\u2011class experiences, people see real value in travelling to New Zealand \u2014 and they\u2019re staying longer and exploring more.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Government has introduced a $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package<\/strong>, expanded NZeTA access<\/strong> to reduce visa barriers, and invested in attracting more international visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upston says these measures are already paying dividends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIncreased visitor spending flows directly into our regions, supports local jobs and creates opportunities for communities and businesses up and down the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She says the message is clear: tourism is central to the Government\u2019s plan to \u201cfix the basics and build the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
