Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani slammed his Iranian counterpart for \u201cflagrant\u201d violations of Qatar\u2019s sovereignty on Wednesday in the first publicly revealed call between a Gulf Arab state and the Islamic Republic since the start of the recent conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Qatari readout of the discussion, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi claimed that Iran\u2019s missile and drone strikes against Qatar were \u201cdirected at American interests and were not intended to target the Gulf state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese Iranian actions reflected \u2018an escalatory approach\u2019 and did not indicate any genuine desire for de-escalation,\u201d the Qatari foreign ministry stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Sheikh Mohammed, who is also the Qatari prime minister, \u201ccategorically rejected\u201d that assertion, per the Qatari Foreign Ministry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Qatari foreign minister cited \u201cthe civilian and residential areas inside the country struck by the attacks,\u201d including \u201cthe vicinity of Hamad International Airport, as well as vital infrastructure and industrial zones\u201d and \u201cfacilities linked to liquefied natural gas production,\u201d per the readout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe added that the attacks were not limited to missiles but were ongoing through drones, as well as aircraft that had entered Qatari airspace and were intercepted by the country\u2019s armed forces,\u201d the Qataris added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese Iranian actions reflected \u2018an escalatory approach\u2019 and did not indicate any genuine desire for de-escalation or resolution,\u201d per the readout, which added that Tehran is \u201cseeking to harm its neighbors and draw them into a war \u2018that is not theirs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of Tuesday, Iran had fired about 150 drones and missiles at Qatar since the United States and Israel launched combat operations against Iran on Saturday. Qatar announced on Monday that it also shot down two Iranian Su-24 tactical bombers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran may have hoped for a friendlier reception from Qatar given Israel\u2019s airstrike<\/a> targeting Hamas leaders in Doha in September and Qatar\u2019s hostility towards the Jewish State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran previously targeted U.S. military forces at Al-Udeid Air Base outside Doha during the 12-Day War in June, which Iran expressed \u201cregret\u201d for in a call with the Qatari emir at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
