Ministers David Seymour and Chris Bishop say the Government is now preparing to remove or suspend some of these barriers to strengthen the country\u2019s fuel resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submissions highlighted several recurring issues, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Weight limits preventing heavy vehicles from carrying more per trip<\/strong>, forcing extra journeys and increasing fuel use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Licence thresholds that disadvantage zero\u2011emission vehicles<\/strong>, such as electric utes that weigh more than diesel equivalents and therefore require a higher\u2011class licence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restrictions on when over\u2011dimension vehicles can travel<\/strong>, limiting off\u2011peak movement and reducing efficiency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Route bans on key motorway and toll road sections<\/strong>, forcing longer detours and unnecessary fuel burn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister for Regulation David Seymour says the Tipline has been crucial in identifying real\u2011world obstacles. \u201cNew Zealand\u2019s fuel supply is stable, and we\u2019re focussed on keeping it that way. The situation in the Middle East affects everyone, so everyone should have a say on potential Government edicts that could impact them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says the Government\u2019s early response to the risk of global fuel disruption has been strengthened by public input. \u201cWe are still in Phase 1 of the National Fuel Response Plan, but we don\u2019t want a repeat of the Covid\u201119 lockdowns. Doing the work to boost fuel efficiency now helps ensure we can stay in Phase 1 for as long as possible, causing the least disruption to Kiwis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transport Minister Chris Bishop says freight operators have been clear about the impact of current rules. \u201cOne of the consistent messages from the sector is that weight restrictions under the Vehicle Dimensions and Mass Rule are holding back efficiency. Even small increases in permitted loads could reduce the number of trips needed, saving time, lowering costs, and reducing fuel use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says any changes will be balanced with safety and network considerations. \u201cThere are sensible adjustments we can make that lift productivity without compromising standards. Fuel prices are already putting pressure on households and businesses, which is why this work matters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All regulatory options are being prepared so they can be activated quickly if the Government moves to Phase 2 of the fuel response.
