{"id":12711,"date":"2026-05-07T05:53:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T17:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=12711"},"modified":"2026-05-06T17:09:45","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T05:09:45","slug":"top-trump-advisers-urge-china-to-leverage-iran-ties-to-reopen-strait-of-hormuz-to-global-traffic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=12711","title":{"rendered":"Top Trump advisers urge China to leverage Iran ties to reopen Strait of Hormuz to global traffic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By\u00a0Malek Fouda\/Euronews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have both expressed a need for China to leverage its tight relations with Tehran to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz for \u201ctheir own interests\u201d.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>White House officials are urging China to use its influence with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, just days before US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to meet in a highly-anticipated summit in Beijing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/8.html-load.com\/feed\/wzg\/1za\/3vz\/www.euronews.com\/bzj\/ejhebjjofrzr8r8hhhrviojmr0mzmjyxrvsiar8rqgjargacr0mgarkymir2gjargfig3scrkcg3ipchfrvsiar2gjargsyaoymzprksipjcpjrcnr2yfrcc7j3yrkrfrprmrfqqsip4mzrapr0c7rfqqrf9rr8rfrprw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Chinese officials to use Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi&#8217;s visit to China to urge Tehran to release its chokehold on the critical waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Araghchi on Wednesday, the official Chinese Xinhua news agency reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope the Chinese tell him what he needs to be told,\u201d Rubio said during a White House briefing on Tuesday. \u201cAnd that is that what you are doing in the strait is causing you to be globally isolated. All rights reserved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The top US diplomat went on to argue that Beijing has been hit harder than Washington by Iran\u2019s effective shuttering of the strait during the war the US and Israel launched on the 28th of February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beijing&#8217;s export-driven economy depends on shipments going through the strait. All rights reserved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Three diplomats who were familiar with China\u2019s behind-the-scenes efforts also confirmed that Beijing, the biggest purchaser of Iranian oil, used its leverage to get them back to the negotiating table as talks appeared on the brink of collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the Republican administration believes China can still do more to get involved in reopening the critical waterway to international maritime traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe threat of attacks from Iran has closed the strait \u2014 we are reopening it,\u201d Bessent said in an interview. \u201cSo I would urge the Chinese to join us in supporting this international operation.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/8.html-load.com\/feed\/wzg\/1za\/3vz\/www.euronews.com\/bzj\/ejhebjjofrzr8r8hhhrviojmr0mzmjyxrvsiar8rqgjargacr0mgarkymir2gjargfig3scrkcg3ipchfrvsiar2gjargsyaoymzprksipjcpjrgqr2yfrcc7j3yrkrfrprmrfqqsip4mzrapr0c7rfqqrf9rr8rfrprw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bessent added that the war in Iran sits high on the president\u2019s agenda of items to discuss with Xi.
