{"id":13009,"date":"2026-05-14T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T19:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=13009"},"modified":"2026-05-14T08:25:45","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T20:25:45","slug":"uk-pm-keir-starmer-says-he-will-stay-in-office-as-two-ministers-quit-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=13009","title":{"rendered":"UK PM Keir Starmer says he will stay in office as two ministers quit government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Gavin Blackburn\/Euronews<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer told Cabinet ministers that he took responsibility for devastating losses in last week\u2019s local elections across the UK but he would fight on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday that he intends to stay in office as he met with members of his Cabinet in crunch talks that could determine his future.<a href=\"https:\/\/8.html-load.com\/feed\/wzg\/1za\/3vz\/www.euronews.com\/bzj\/ejhebjjofrzr8r8hhhrviojmr0mzmjyxrvsiar8rqgjargacr0mgarkymir2gjargfig3scrkcg3ipchfrvsiar2gjargsyaoymzprksipjcpjrcnr2yfrcc7j3yrkrfrprmrfqqsip4mzrapr0c7rfqqrf9rr8rfrprw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer is trying to shore up support within his Cabinet following hefty losses for the Labour Party in local elections last week, which if repeated in a national election would see it overwhelmingly ejected from power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meeting was taking place after more than 70 Labour backbenchers, representing nearly a fifth of the party&#8217;s representation in Parliament, said that Starmer should stand down, or at least set out a timetable for his departure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, junior minister Miatta Fahnbulleh stepped down and urged Starmer \u201cto do the right thing for the country\u201d and set a timetable to step aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fahnbulleh, who was the housing, communities and local government minister, said that she was proud of her service, but that the government hadn&#8217;t acted with the vision, pace and mandate for change it had been given by voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.euronews.com\/articles\/stories\/09\/75\/53\/29\/808x539_cmsv2_0c9fe124-3078-5c43-b511-c79b834574e2-9755329.jpg\" alt=\"Cameras are covered with rain covers as journalists wait for a showing of Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street in London, 11 May, 2026\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Cameras are covered with rain covers as journalists wait for a showing of Britain&#8217;s Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street in London, 11 May, 2026<\/em>&nbsp;AP Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNor have we governed as a Labour Party clear about our values and strong in our convictions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Minister for Safeguarding, Jess Phillips, wrote in a letter to Starmer, reported by Sky News and others, that she &#8220;cannot continue to serve as a minister under the current leadership&#8221; adding she was &#8220;not seeing the change I need.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Starmer doubled down on his resolve to stay in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer told Cabinet ministers that he took responsibility for devastating losses in last week\u2019s local elections across the UK but he would fight on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer said that there\u2019s a process to oust a leader and that it hadn&#8217;t been triggered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe country expects us to get on with governing,\u201d he said. \u201dThat is what I am doing and what we must do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer on Monday rejected demands that he step down in a speech in London that was intended to answer his detractors, saying that he would \u201cface up to the big challenges\u201d and restore hope to Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour has been plunged into panic by heavy losses last week in local elections across England and legislative votes in Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elections were seen as an unofficial referendum on Starmer, whose popularity has plummeted since he swept to power in a landslide win less than two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer\u2019s government has struggled to deliver promised economic growth, repair tattered public services and shield the public from the rising cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Confidence in Starmer has also been damaged by policy U-turns on issues including welfare reform and his disastrous decision to appoint Peter Mandelson, a scandal-tarnished friend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as ambassador to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week\u2019s elections saw Labour squeezed from right and left, losing votes to both the anti-immigrant Reform UK and the \u201ceco-populist\u201d Green Party.
