One New Zealand member posted online about being heartbroken at losing her kitten, with several church members telling <em>The Age<\/em> she was required to euthanise it to comply with the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The instruction reportedly followed a dog attack last month involving a young relative of church leader Bruce Hales. The four\u2011year\u2011old boy survived but required facial stitches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A letter read aloud in Brethren meetings on May 2 \u2014 including gatherings in New Zealand \u2014 stated: \u201cThe ownership of such an animal, let alone it being kept at a brother\u2019s home, is clearly wrong.\u201d The message also referenced earlier teaching against pet ownership, appearing to allude to a controversial pet ban imposed by the church in the 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One member who spoke anonymously to <em>The Age<\/em> said leadership directives are rare, and her \u201cheart sank\u201d when the message was read. She said she could never part with her service dog: \u201cIf I\u2019m asked to choose between my church and the dog, it\u2019s going to be the dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church denies any organised pet cull. A spokesman told <em>The Age<\/em> the message was \u201csimply a reminder of a principle that was established some time ago.\u201d The church also rejected long\u2011standing reports of a widespread pet purge in the 1960s, calling them \u201ccompletely untrue \u2026 to the best of our knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former members now fear the latest directive could trigger another large\u2011scale removal of pets.
