{"id":13238,"date":"2026-05-21T08:14:52","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T20:14:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=13238"},"modified":"2026-05-21T08:14:52","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T20:14:52","slug":"future-fund-clash-escalates-as-hipkins-downplays-detail-and-national-demands-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=13238","title":{"rendered":"Future Fund Clash Escalates as Hipkins Downplays Detail and National Demands Answers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Colin Ambler\/cvnznews.com<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The political fight over Labour\u2019s proposed New Zealand Future Fund has sharpened, with Labour leader Chris Hipkins insisting voters \u201cdon\u2019t really care\u201d about the policy\u2019s missing details, while National\u2019s Simeon Brown accuses Labour of hiding a multibillion\u2011dollar fiscal gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Future Fund, unveiled last October, would redirect dividends from selected state\u2011owned enterprises (SOEs) into a long\u2011term investment vehicle aimed at supporting New Zealand businesses. But Labour has refused to identify which SOEs would be included until after the election, citing the need for official advice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"177\" src=\"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Hipkins-Future-Funds-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Hipkins-Future-Funds-1.jpg 284w, https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Hipkins-Future-Funds-1-150x93.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Labour leader Chris Hipkins said the public don&#8217;t &#8220;really care&#8221; about the detail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Hipkins defended the lack of clarity, arguing the public is more interested in Labour\u2019s commitment to keeping state assets in New Zealand ownership than in the specifics of which companies might be involved. \u201cI don\u2019t think the public really care which companies are going to go in or not,\u201d he said, framing the debate as a choice between Labour\u2019s approach and what he claims is National\u2019s appetite for asset sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National has not released its asset policy for the next term, though it has previously ruled out sales in the short term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pressed repeatedly on how Labour could estimate the fund\u2019s revenue without knowing which SOEs would be included, Hipkins said Budget forecasts would provide a guide. He acknowledged Labour already had \u201can idea\u201d of the revenue that could be transferred but would not name the entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour finance spokesperson Barbara Edmonds earlier said the party could not release a list because some SOEs carry Treaty of Waitangi obligations, including rights of first refusal. He argues SOE dividends \u2014 which he says total $688 million annually \u2014 currently support frontline services such as schools, hospitals and police.
