That marks a 15.8% spike from the year before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those who took their lives via medically assisted suicide used Canada\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gc.ca\/eng\/cj-jp\/ad-am\/bk-di.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program<\/a>, which has overseen the deaths of 60,301 people since it became legal in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health Canada describes&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cbn.com\/news\/world\/canadian-hospital-no-beds-offers-euthanasia-woman-seeking-help-suicidal-thoughts\">MA<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cbn.com\/news\/world\/canadian-hospital-no-beds-offers-euthanasia-woman-seeking-help-suicidal-thoughts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">I<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cbn.com\/news\/world\/canadian-hospital-no-beds-offers-euthanasia-woman-seeking-help-suicidal-thoughts\">D<\/a>&nbsp;as a \u201chealth service that allows someone who is found to be eligible to receive assistance from a medical practitioner to end their life.\u201d The grievous program uses poison, which is administered orally or intravenously, to end participants\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When MAID was first introduced to the populace, it was accessible only to adults whose natural death was \u201creasonably foreseeable.\u201d Then, in 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/canada-delay-assisted-death-solely-mental-illness-until-2027-2024-02-01\/#:~:text=Canada%20legalized%20MAID%20in%202016,provinces%20and%20three%20northern%20territories.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to Reuters<\/a>, the country expanded the offering to those not only with terminal but incurable ailments and disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/health-services-benefits\/medical-assistance-dying.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is set to expand yet again<\/a>&nbsp;on March 17, 2027, when people suffering \u201csolely from a mental illness\u201d will become eligible to participate in the MAID program. The expansion was initially set to take effect this year, but lawmakers in Ottawa delayed the rollout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-68120380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported by the BBC<\/a>, Health Canada said the government \u201chas heard \u2014 and agrees \u2014 that the health system is not yet ready for this expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health Minister Mark Holland said in February he agrees with MAID advocates who equivocate mental and physical suffering and explained the delay is only about ensuring the \u201creadiness\u201d of the medical system in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dying with Dignity, an advocacy group supportive of medically assisted suicide, condemned the delay, calling the move a \u201cdenial of constitutional rights for suffering people across Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The editorial board for The Washington Post urged Canada to rethink its euthanasia program in a column earlier this year, asserting the pending expansion of the program \u201cgoes too far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany in the grips of psychiatric distress view, temporarily, suicide as their only way out, only to later be grateful they did not kill themselves in the depths of their suffering,\u201d wrote the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That has certainly come to pass in Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, for example, 61-year-old Alan Nichols was hospitalized over concerns he might have been suicidal and was in jeopardy of hurting himself. Within a month, he applied for the MAID program and was killed, listing \u201chearing loss\u201d as the reason he wanted to die,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-science-health-toronto-7c631558a457188d2bd2b5cfd360a867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another person, a woman who went to a hospital in Vancouver, sought psychiatric help because she was experiencing frequent suicidal thoughts and, rather than offering her much-needed medical attention, a hospital staffer reportedly pointed her to the MAID program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 37-year-old woman, Kathrin Mentler, said she went to Vancouver General Hospital\u2019s Access and Assessment Centre in June 2023, recalling her goal was to \u201ckeep myself safe\u201d because she was \u201cin crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her examination, a hospital employee told Mentler there were \u201cno beds\u201d in the facility and asked her if she\u2019d \u201cconsidered MAID.\u201d The woman told the Christian Institute, \u201cThe clinician then went on to speak of her \u2018relief\u2019 at the death of another patient struggling with mental illness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat made me feel like my life was worthless or a problem that could be solved if I chose MAID,\u201d said Mentler, later telling The Globe and Mail, \u201cThe more I think about [the program], I think it brings up more and more ethical and moral questions around it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please be in prayer for the Lord to intervene in the lives of those considering medically assisted suicide.
