The funding, delivered through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (RIF), was announced by Associate Minister for Regional Development <strong>Mark Patterson<\/strong>, who described the project as a \u201ctransformational opportunity\u201d for Eastern Southland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development covers <strong>43 hectares<\/strong> and is a <strong>50\/50 partnership<\/strong> between Ng\u0101i Tahu iwi authority <strong>Hokonui R\u016bnanga<\/strong> and <strong>Robertson Transport Limited<\/strong>. For years, the Gore District has faced a shortage of large industrial lots \u2014 a constraint that has limited business expansion and regional growth. Patterson said the project directly addresses that gap while strengthening long\u2011term economic prospects for both partners and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategically located on <strong>State Highway 1<\/strong>, the $13.6 million project will convert underutilised farmland into a bustling industrial hub. Up to <strong>50 jobs<\/strong> are expected during construction, with the site designed to attract industries including fertiliser distribution, agricultural equipment servicing, warehousing, and retail operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key feature of the development is its long\u2011term benefit to mana whenua. Hokonui R\u016bnanga will gain a <strong>sustainable income stream<\/strong> through commercial leases, enabling it to expand essential health and social services for wh\u0101nau across the region. Patterson said this aligns with the Government\u2019s commitment to supporting iwi\u2011led economic development and strengthening regional resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southland already punches well above its weight \u2014 producing <strong>12 percent of New Zealand\u2019s pastoral exports<\/strong> despite being home to just <strong>2 percent of the population<\/strong>. Patterson said the investment ensures the region can continue to grow, diversify, and attract new industries.
