{"id":9751,"date":"2026-02-06T05:04:48","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T16:04:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=9751"},"modified":"2026-02-05T17:06:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T04:06:34","slug":"55000-ukrainian-soldiers-killed-since-full-scale-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cvnznews.com\/?p=9751","title":{"rendered":"\u00a055,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed since full-scale invasion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volodymyr Zelenskyy reflected on the military situation, diplomatic prospects and the human losses suffered by his country since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022 during an exclusive interview with French public broadcaster France 2.<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressed the human cost of the war, ongoing negotiations and Europe\u2019s stance toward Russia during an interview with French public TV channel France 2 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visibly emotional, Zelensky shared figures that are rarely made public regarding the number of casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn Ukraine, officially, on the battlefield, the number of soldiers killed \u2014 whether career soldiers or mobilised \u2014 is 55,000. [Added to this is] a large number of people whom Ukraine considers to be missing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That figure is disputed by several independent research centres, which estimate that the actual number of Ukrainian soldiers killed is significantly higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington DC, the\u00a0estimate ranges\u00a0between 100,000 and 140,000 killed since the start of the war in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\u00a0new trilateral talks\u00a0are being held in Abu Dhabi, Zelensky denounced what he described as a pressure strategy by Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, Russia \u201cwants to inflict more suffering on Ukrainians so that they accept what our American friends call a \u2018compromise\u2019.\u201d But, he added, \u201cthis is in reality an ultimatum from the Kremlin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;If we lose this war, we lose our independence&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These remarks come amid renewed Russian strikes. On Wednesday, two people were killed in a drone attack in Ukraine\u2019s Dnipropetrovsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous day, Russia had\u00a0already targeted\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure, as temperatures in some areas dropped close to -20\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the diplomatic front, the Ukrainian president stressed the existential stakes of the conflict. \u201cIf we lose this war, we will quite simply lose our country\u2019s independence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked about the role of Western allies, Zelensky spoke about his relationship with French President Emmanuel Macron.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/tag\/emmanuel-macron\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are good friends&#8230; He called me to tell me that he was thinking about resuming dialogue with the Russians. He knows what I think. Putin\u2019s interest is to humiliate Europe. But it is very important that Emmanuel works to bring peace. It will be beneficial for the whole world if there is no more war in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Putin &#8216;is afraid of Trump&#8217;, but &#8216;not of Europeans&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ukrainian president also shared his assessment of the balance of power between Moscow and Western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Russian President Vladimir Putin \u201cis not afraid of Europeans,\u201d Zelensky argued, it is because \u201cEuropeans lived in a wonderful, secure world that they built themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEurope is very democratic&#8230; That is precisely why Ukraine is choosing the path towards Europe,\u201d he said, referring to Kyiv\u2019s\u00a0ambition to join\u00a0the European Union by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, Zelensky believes the Kremlin \u201cis afraid of Trump,\u201d arguing that the US president has \u201cmeans of pressure through the economy, through sanctions, through weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Donald Trump had called on Vladimir Putin to \u201cend the war,\u201d following the massive strikes on Kyiv these past few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Zelensky stressed that the war in Ukraine has consequences beyond his country\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUkraine\u2019s neighbouring countries understand that they will be Putin\u2019s next victims, that Russia will advance,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose in Europe who have understood this are helping Ukraine very effectively&#8230; We are all fighting to defend the European way of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Union on Wednesday&nbsp;opened the door&nbsp;to the purchase of additional British-made weapons for Ukraine, as part of a \u20ac90 billion loan that 24 EU member states want to make available to Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bloc\u2019s 27 countries have agreed to allow certain non-EU states, such as the United Kingdom, to take part in the scheme in exchange for a financial contribution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Volodymyr Zelenskyy reflected on the military situation, diplomatic prospects and the human losses suffered by his country since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022 during an exclusive interview with French public broadcaster France 2.
