Te Pāti Māori Raises Alarm Over Māori Roll Failures

Te Pāti Māori is demanding urgent answers after two separate system failures disrupted enrolments onto the Māori roll during the final days of the option period — a moment carrying unusually high political stakes for the party. With polling consistently placing Te Pāti Māori below the 5 percent threshold, the party’s future representation in Parliament may depend heavily on the survival and strength of the Māori seats. Any barrier to Māori roll participation therefore lands with amplified consequence.

The first issue was raised by a member of the public who reported being unable to complete enrolment on the Enrol to Vote platform after encountering an error. Following Te Pāti Māori enquiries, a second problem emerged: RealMe verification services appeared to be unavailable. The Electoral Commission later confirmed disruptions affecting passport verification and RealMe identity systems.

With the Māori roll option closing on 6 August, co‑leader Rawiri Waititi says the failures strike at the heart of democratic access. “This is not just a technical issue. This is about the ability of our people to exercise their democratic rights,” he said, warning that whānau attempting to enrol should not be met with error messages or uncertainty about whether the process can be completed.

Te Pāti Māori is also concerned the Electoral Commission only began publicly communicating the issue after the party raised it. They are seeking full transparency on when agencies became aware of the problems, how many people were affected, what steps are being taken to ensure no eligible voter is disadvantaged, and whether additional protections are needed to safeguard the integrity of the Māori roll process.

The party’s urgency reflects the broader political landscape: if Māori roll participation drops or enrolment barriers persist, Te Pāti Māori risks losing critical electorate seats at a time when its party vote alone may not secure representation. Waititi says government agencies must ensure voting services are “accessible, reliable and available to everyone,” urging Māori voters to check their enrolment immediately and contact the Commission if they encounter difficulties.
