Peters and Swarbrick Trade Blows Over Paris Agreement

It’s only the first week of the election campaign, but the political artillery is already thundering across the battlefield.

With parties barely out of the starting blocks, a fresh war of words has erupted between Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters, proving that campaign season has arrived with all the subtlety of a tank charge.

The latest clash centres on New Zealand’s membership of the Paris Climate Agreement, with the Greens accusing Peters of advocating withdrawal from the international climate pact while failing to seek official advice on the consequences.

In a statement, Swarbrick said Peters had “not asked his officials a single question” about what withdrawing from the agreement could mean for New Zealand’s economy, trade relationships and international commitments.

“The majority of current Government coalition parties are ramping up the campaign to remove our country from the world’s main climate change agreement, but the Minister of Foreign Affairs hasn’t asked his officials a single question about what that would cost us,” she said.

Swarbrick argued that New Zealand’s climate commitments are intertwined with free trade agreements with the United Kingdom and European Union and claimed exporters and farmers deserved clarity before politicians proposed such a significant shift.

She also accused the Government of undermining climate commitments while struggling economically, saying the Greens were focused on delivering affordable living, environmental protection and “honest politics”.

Peters Fires Back

If the Greens were hoping their comments would go unanswered, they didn’t have to wait long.

Peters responded with both barrels, accusing Swarbrick of displaying “blistering ignorance” and suggesting her statement demonstrated why the Greens had never held Cabinet positions in more than five decades of political existence.

The New Zealand First leader rejected Swarbrick’s claim that he is responsible for climate negotiations and trade agreements.

“She said ‘Peters is officially responsible for our international climate negotiations and managing our trade agreements.’ This is wrong,” Peters said.

“It is the Minister for Climate Change and Minister for Trade who are responsible for those two things.”

Peters went further, claiming Swarbrick had failed to understand basic ministerial responsibilities despite years in Parliament.

“After all her time in Parliament she has proven she has learnt nothing.”

The veteran politician also took issue with the Greens’ references to “honest politics”, describing their allegations as “a demonstrable lie”.

Paris Agreement Becomes Campaign Flashpoint

While the exchange quickly descended into personal criticism, the underlying issue is likely to become a major battleground during the election.

New Zealand First has advocated withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, arguing the costs imposed on New Zealand are disproportionate to the country’s contribution to global emissions.

Peters claimed New Zealand produces only a fraction of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions while facing potentially massive costs through international climate obligations.

He argued taxpayers could ultimately foot a bill running into billions of dollars, while major emitting nations continue producing vastly greater levels of carbon dioxide.

“Why are we making a rod for our own backs, punishing our farmers and our taxpayers and our economy, when China or the US could sneeze and produce more CO2 overnight than we do in a year?” Peters said.

He also dismissed suggestions that leaving the Paris Agreement would automatically jeopardise New Zealand’s trade agreements.

“Countries are not going to pull out of mutually beneficial trade agreements because we pull out of Paris.”

Campaign Temperature Rising

Whether New Zealand remains committed to Paris or follows New Zealand First’s preferred path of withdrawal will be debated in the months ahead.

What is already clear, however, is that the election campaign is heating up rapidly.

With polling day still weeks away, politicians are already scrapping like it’s the final day of the battle rather than the opening skirmish. If this opening exchange between Peters and Swarbrick is any indication, voters should buckle up. The campaign has barely begun, and the gloves are already off.
