ACC Puts Safety and Savings in Motorcyclists’ Hands

ACC’s biggest shake‑up to motorcycle levies in more than a decade has arrived — and for riders across New Zealand, the headline is simple: skill now pays.

From 1 July 2026, motorcyclists who complete an approved Ride Forever Gold course can earn a 25% discount on their ACC motorcycle levy. It’s part of the new ACC Rider Reward, a national initiative designed to link proven safety training with real‑world savings.

A new levy system — and a new incentive

ACC is refining how motorcycle risk groups are set, shifting from two engine‑size bands to three. At the same time, riders will gradually contribute a slightly larger share of injury costs — rising from 28% today to 33% in 2026, and 37% in 2027. The rest continues to be covered by all motor vehicle owners through the Motor Vehicle Account.

The impact varies: some engine bands will see decreases, others increases. But the real game‑changer is the reward sitting on the table.

A decade of ACC data shows riders who complete Ride Forever Gold training are 26% less likely to crash. Now that reduced risk comes with a direct financial benefit.

To qualify, riders must complete a Gold course on or after 1 July 2025, hold a current licence, and purchase their motorcycle rego for a period starting on or after 1 July 2026. The discount then applies automatically — to every bike registered in that rider’s name — for two years.

Not just a cost change — a cultural shift

Some rider groups have raised concerns about levy increases for larger‑capacity machines. It’s a fair discussion; motorcycling is more than transport — it’s identity, community, whānau.

But ACC has built an off‑ramp: invest a day in training, and you can reduce your own levy. It’s a rare moment where riders are being offered agency rather than simply absorbing a cost.

A message to riders and the people who love them

Whether you’re a weekend tourer, a commuter, a learner, or the partner who waits for someone to come home safe — this change touches your world.

  • Riders: Treat Ride Forever Gold as training that pays for itself in skill, confidence, and levy savings.
  • Whānau: Encourage the riders you love to get trained — it’s one of the most protective conversations you can have.
  • Clubs and experienced riders: Bring newer riders into your fold, mentor them, and help them find their way to a course.

Safer riding has always been a community effort. Now, it’s also a chance to put money back in riders’ pockets — and keep more New Zealanders coming home.
