New Zealand’s tourism sector has taken another strong step forward, with new figures showing more international visitors arriving than before the pandemic. Statistics New Zealand recorded 256,600 overseas visitors in July 2026, an increase of 8.5 percent on last year and even higher than July 2019 .

Hon Louise Upston
Minister for Tourism and Hospitality says more visitors means more money flowing into New Zealand

Tourism Minister Louise Upston says the numbers show “real momentum” returning to one of New Zealand’s biggest export industries. In the year to July, 3.69 million visitors arrived — a 9 percent jump on the previous year. Australia continues to lead the way, with 134,900 Aussies crossing the ditch in July, the highest ever for that month .

But for everyday New Zealanders, what does “tourism growth” actually mean?

For many people, tourism is simply seen as more travellers in airports and more accents on Queenstown streets. But the impact runs much deeper. Tourism is New Zealand’s second‑largest export, meaning it brings billions of dollars into the country — money that supports jobs, small businesses, and regional communities. When visitor numbers rise, cafés hire extra staff, tour operators expand their services, accommodation providers invest in upgrades, and local shops see more foot traffic.

Growth also means more stability for towns that rely heavily on visitors. Places like Rotorua, Te Anau, Kaikōura, and the West Coast feel the benefits directly when international travellers return. More visitors can help keep local attractions open, maintain transport links, and support hospitality workers whose livelihoods depend on steady demand.

And it’s not just about business. Tourism helps fund conservation projects, walking tracks, and DOC facilities that Kiwis use too. When the sector is strong, there’s more investment in protecting the natural landscapes that make New Zealand special.

Visitor numbers from China and the United States also rose sharply — up 25 percent and 12 percent respectively — showing that New Zealand remains a destination people are willing to travel far to experience .

As Minister Upston puts it, New Zealand’s world‑class scenery and warm hospitality continue to draw people in. And when tourism thrives, everyday New Zealanders benefit — not just the tourism operators, but the communities and workers who keep the country moving.
