New Zealand’s banking sector is heading into a decade of rapid transformation, with digital banking emerging as the biggest pressure point for consumers and regulators alike. A new Future of Banking study released by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) outlines how technology, artificial intelligence and shifting customer expectations could reshape the way Kiwis manage their money by 2035.

Assistant Governor for Financial Stability Angus McGregor says the country is entering “a period of profound and accelerating change”, driven largely by digital innovation. For everyday New Zealanders, that means more banking done online, more services delivered through apps and platforms, and fewer traditional face‑to‑face interactions — a shift that excites some but worries many.

The study sets out three possible futures: a steady evolution led by existing banks, a digital banking revolution where fintechs and online‑only banks gain major market share, and a broader ecosystem model where banking becomes embedded inside digital platforms people already use daily.

The second scenario — a digital banking revolution — is the one drawing the most attention. Consumers are increasingly concerned about cybersecurity, data privacy, AI‑driven decision‑making, and what happens when essential financial services move further away from physical branches. The RBNZ notes that while digital banking could bring stronger competition, better pricing and more innovation, it also introduces new risks: operational complexity, reliance on third‑party tech providers, and financial activity shifting outside traditional regulatory boundaries.

Across all scenarios, the study highlights both opportunity and vulnerability. Digital tools could make banking more efficient and accessible, but they also demand higher levels of trust, resilience and oversight.

The RBNZ stresses that the report is not a prediction and does not recommend specific policy changes. Instead, it aims to help New Zealand prepare for whatever shape banking takes next — whether led by established institutions, digital challengers or entirely new financial ecosystems.

“We’re not trying to pick the future,” McGregor says. “We’re trying to understand it — so New Zealanders can bank safely, confidently and competitively, no matter how the landscape evolves.”
