NZ Warned of Major Risk to Primary Industries as Economy Rebounds as Bird Flu hits Australia

New Zealand’s fragile economic recovery could face a serious blow if the deadly H5N1 bird flu reaches our shores, Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard has warned. With Australia confirming the highly pathogenic strain in a migratory seabird in Western Australia, the threat is no longer theoretical — it’s on our doorstep.

Hoggard says New Zealand is “well prepared,” but preparation alone won’t shield the country from the economic shockwaves if the virus enters the wild bird population. “Since the H5N1 strain started spreading globally, our geographical isolation has protected us and bought us time,” he said. “But now is the moment for everyone — farmers, backyard bird owners, hunters, trampers — to tighten biosecurity habits.”

The strain detected in Australia, H5N1 2.3.4.4b, is the same variant responsible for mass deaths of wild birds, poultry, and even mammals overseas. Early tests suggest a second infected bird has already been found. While Australian authorities report no poultry infections yet, the detection is a stark warning for New Zealand’s primary sector — the backbone of the national economy.

If H5N1 arrives here, it cannot be eradicated. It would spread through wild birds, threatening poultry farms, egg production, export markets, and the livelihoods of thousands. After years of economic strain, inflation pressure, and a slow climb back to growth, a major biosecurity event is the last thing New Zealand can afford.

Hoggard says the focus now is on limiting impact, not pretending the virus can be kept out forever. “Look for signs of illness in your birds, prevent contact with wild birds, and keep boots, gear, and surfaces clean,” he said. Outdoor users — hunters, trampers, bird watchers — are urged to avoid sick or dead wildlife and report clusters of three or more dead birds to 0800 80 99 66.

There is no food safety risk, and human health risk remains low. But the economic risk is anything but.

A single outbreak could shut down exports, cripple poultry operations, and send shockwaves through a primary industry sector that New Zealand’s recovery depends on.

The message is clear: bird flu is coming — and New Zealand cannot afford to be complacent.
