Editorial: Accountability on Trial

When institutions are confronted with uncomfortable questions, they often reach for the safest distraction. They debate definitions. They quibble over technicalities. They point at the wording instead of the issue. Anything, it seems, to avoid looking directly at the substance.

Over the past week, CVNZ News published an opinion piece by Dr Christopher Longhurst, followed by a response from CathNews NZ editor Gavin Abraham. Both are now available for readers to examine. And if this exchange has revealed anything, it is this: the easiest way to dodge accountability is to argue about the packaging instead of the contents.

Opinion: Accountability, Editorial Judgement, and the Catholic Church’s Response to Abuse Survivors – cvnznews.com

Let’s be clear. The question raised in Dr Longhurst’s piece was not about endorsement, aggregation, or editorial mechanics. It was about moral consistency — the kind that matters deeply to survivors who have waited years for institutions to act with urgency, transparency, and courage.

When the Church’s communications outlet highlights calls for accountability from Government, survivors are entitled to ask why those same standards do not always appear to apply within the Church itself. That is not an attack. That is not misrepresentation. That is a question — one that has echoed through Royal Commission hearings, survivor testimonies, and public discourse for years.

And yet, in the response we received, the central question was left untouched. Not answered. Not acknowledged. Not even recognised.

Instead, the reply focused on a narrower, safer argument — one that avoids the uncomfortable reality that survivors continue to face delays, defensiveness, and institutional resistance when seeking redress. That reality does not disappear because someone insists the debate should be about editorial endorsement.

Small newsrooms like CVNZ do not have the luxury of avoiding hard questions. We do not have layers of institutional insulation. We do not have PR teams to soften the edges. What we do have is a responsibility — to survivors, to readers, and to the public — to keep asking the questions that matter, even when larger institutions would prefer we didn’t.

We appreciate that CathNews responded. But appreciation does not erase the fact that the core issue remains unanswered: If urgency and accountability are virtues worth demanding from Government, why are they not always demonstrated with equal force within the Church?

That question will not go away. Not because CVNZ raised it, but because survivors live it.

cvnznews.com will continue to publish perspectives that challenge, provoke, and illuminate. Not because we seek conflict, but because accountability is not a privilege reserved for the powerful. It is a standard that belongs to everyone — especially those who speak in the name of moral authority.

We are a small newsroom. We are independent. And we are not afraid to ask the questions that matter.
