Prank Turned Ugly When Kids Forget Actions Have Consequences

A Saturday night prank in Coffs Harbour has escalated into national headlines after a 78‑year‑old man was charged for allegedly driving into two boys on e‑bikes — a moment that has reignited the debate over responsibility, respect, and the slow erosion of boundaries between generations.

Police say a group of children were playing “ding‑dong ditch” around 8.30pm, knocking on the man’s door before speeding off on e‑bikes. It’s the kind of mischief older New Zealanders will remember from their own childhoods — except back then, you ran on foot, and you certainly didn’t have a motorised getaway vehicle.

What happened next is now the subject of CCTV footage and a courtroom. According to police, the homeowner got into his car and pursued the boys, mounting a gutter and driving along a nature strip before colliding with the back of an e‑bike. The boys, aged 11 and 12, were thrown off and dragged several metres. They escaped with minor injuries and were later discharged from hospital.

Parents have described the incident as “shocking” and “wildly disproportionate”, insisting the boys were simply being silly. And yes — they were. But beneath the outrage lies a deeper cultural tension: children pushing boundaries, and adults increasingly powerless to enforce them.

For decades, society has steadily stripped away the authority of older generations. We tell kids they can do anything, challenge anyone, question everything — and then act surprised when they treat strangers’ homes like props in a game. The man’s alleged response crossed a legal line, but the situation didn’t appear out of thin air. It grew from a culture where respect for age, property, and personal space has been eroded one “harmless prank” at a time.

Police have charged the man with predatory driving and driving in a manner that menaces others. He appeared in court on Sunday and will reappear on September 23.

Two boys walked away with scratches. A 78‑year‑old walked away with charges. And a community is left asking whether this was really just about a prank — or about a society that’s forgotten where the boundaries are.
