A port worker has died after a tragic incident at Wellington’s waterfront on Tuesday morning, prompting shock across the maritime sector and a multi‑agency investigation.
Emergency services were called to CentrePort shortly after the incident occurred during routine operations involving an employee of logistics company C3. Despite immediate efforts from colleagues and first responders, the worker was fatally injured and died at the scene.
CentrePort chief executive Anthony Delaney confirmed the death and said the port community was reeling.
“This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the worker’s family, loved ones, and colleagues,” Delaney said. “Our priority is supporting those directly affected, including staff who were part of the initial response.”
C3 also issued a statement expressing deep sadness at the loss of their employee, describing the event as “incredibly difficult” for the team and the wider port workforce. The company is now working with police and Maritime NZ as investigations begin.
The circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and officials have not yet confirmed how the worker was injured. Maritime NZ, the lead safety regulator for New Zealand’s major ports, said its investigation would be “thorough” and that no further details could be released while inquiries are underway.
A spokesperson acknowledged the wider impact of the death, noting it is the first fatality at a major commercial port since 2022.
“Any death at work is incredibly sad,” they said. “The sector has worked hard over recent years to improve safety and reduce harm. We remain focused on ensuring people return home safely.”
WorkSafe has been notified but is not the lead agency.
The port community, known for its tight bonds and demanding work environment, is now supporting one another as they await answers.
Police and Maritime NZ continue to investigate.
