The New Zealand Healthcare Chaplains Association (NZHCA) is marking a remarkable milestone—60 years of dedicated service supporting spiritual care across the nation’s healthcare system.

Since 1966, NZHCA has stood alongside patients, families, and healthcare staff during some of life’s most vulnerable and hope‑filled moments. Their chaplains offer compassionate presence and spiritual support to people of every faith background—and to those with none—helping ensure that care in our hospitals is truly holistic.

President Wyatt Butcher says the anniversary is a moment to honour the organisation’s shared history, give thanks for those who have shaped its journey, and look ahead with fresh vision for the future of spiritual care. That future includes a new Memorandum of Understanding with Spiritual Care Australia, strengthening collaboration and raising professional standards across both countries.

NZHCA also provides the only independent credentialling pathway for healthcare chaplains in New Zealand—an increasingly important way of demonstrating that chaplaincy and spiritual care are robust, professional, and essential parts of the healthcare landscape.

As NZHCA celebrates six decades of service, the association remains committed to supporting chaplains, upholding high standards, and championing the vital role of spiritual care in the wellbeing of patients, families, and healthcare workers. Their quiet, faithful work has touched countless lives—including my own—and continues to make a profound difference in our hospitals every day.
