Hokitika is preparing to light up the winter season with a month-long programme of events, experiences and family-friendly activities as Destination Hokitika launches Midwinter Magic throughout July.
The centrepiece of this year’s celebrations will be Puanga Matariki – Light Up Hokitika, transforming the heart of town into a vibrant winter spectacle on Saturday 11 July.
From 6pm to 9pm, Weld Street will be closed to traffic and illuminated with colourful light installations, creating a magical winter atmosphere. The evening will feature cultural performances at the Regent Theatre, live entertainment on the street, and a celebration of Puanga and Matariki that reflects the unique heritage and community spirit of Hokitika.
Destination Hokitika Chairperson Leana Simpson says the event is designed to bring people together during the heart of winter.
“Midwinter Magic is all about embracing the season and celebrating everything that makes Hokitika special. Puanga Matariki – Light Up Hokitika will create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere in the town centre while honouring the cultural significance of this important time of year.”
The event forms part of a wider Midwinter Magic programme running throughout July, offering visitors plenty of reasons to extend their stay and explore the region.
Among the highlights is an extensive schedule of heritage tours, interactive family experiences and train rides at the Westland Industrial Heritage Park.
To add magic to winter in Hokitika, visitors can also enter the Midwinter Magic Giveaway. Anyone who stays two or more nights in Hokitika or spends $50 or more at participating businesses during the promotion period will go in the draw to win a magical Hokitika getaway package, including accommodation, travel, activities and dining experiences.
