New Zealand’s economic outlook received another major boost today, with the National Party unveiling an ambitious trade agenda aimed at securing “the next billion customers” for Kiwi exporters — a move that aligns with a growing wave of positive indicators across the economy.

The announcement comes on the heels of record‑breaking red meat exports, rising business confidence, and fresh signs that New Zealand’s export‑driven recovery is accelerating. National’s Trade spokesperson Todd McClay says the plan is designed to lock in that momentum and push New Zealand into a new era of global opportunity.

“New Zealand is a trading nation. Every extra sale offshore supports stronger businesses, more jobs and higher incomes at home,” McClay said as the party launched its election trade policy. “A re‑elected National Government will apply the same ambition that secured the India free trade agreement and pursue seven new trade negotiations within five years.”

Those seven priority markets — Brazil, Switzerland, Argentina, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Uruguay and the European Free Trade Association — represent nearly 700 million people and more than US$5 trillion in GDP. New Zealand currently exports just $1.8 billion to these economies, highlighting the scale of untapped potential.

The plan includes expanding digital customs systems, cutting $1 billion in non‑tariff barriers, sharpening NZ Trade and Enterprise’s export mandate, and completing at least 23 trade missions in the next term. National also reaffirmed its commitment to doubling the value of exports by 2034 — a target already tracking ahead of schedule, with exports rising from $94.4b to $114.1b.

McClay says the strategy is about securing long‑term prosperity. “Trade is not about what leaves our ports — it’s about what comes back into our communities. When Kiwi businesses sell more to the world, they grow, hire and invest locally.”

The announcement lands at a moment when exporters are enjoying strong global demand, particularly in food, technology and advanced manufacturing. With new markets opening and export values climbing, New Zealand’s economic green shoots are beginning to look more like sustained growth.
