National is sharpening its law‑and‑order message, announcing a dedicated Auckland Transport Police Team aimed at boosting safety across the city’s rapidly expanding public transport network. The policy lands on the same day the City Rail Link officially begins transforming Auckland’s commuter landscape—an event National is using to underline its argument that the city’s transport system is about to get busier, later, and more reliant on visible policing.

Police spokesperson Mark Mitchell says the shift is unavoidable. With peak commuter capacity through the city centre expected to jump by around 50 percent, Mitchell argues that Aucklanders will increasingly depend on trains, buses and ferries, and deserve the confidence that sworn officers are close at hand. The new unit would place police on high‑risk routes, at major stations, and across busy hubs during peak hours, creating what National describes as a “deterrent before offending occurs.”

The plan includes recruiting 50 additional sworn officers, funded through an extra $7 million per year in Budget 2027. Mitchell says the move isn’t a criticism of Auckland Transport staff—who he acknowledges already play a crucial role—but a recognition that they lack the powers and authority of police officers. “Police should be where people are,” he says, framing the initiative as a practical response to a network that is about to carry more people, later into the night, and across more complex routes.

National is pitching the policy as part of its broader promise to “fix the basics,” tying transport safety to its wider narrative of restoring public confidence in essential services. The party insists the City Rail Link is a “gamechanger” for Auckland, but argues that its success depends on ensuring passengers feel safe using it.

The announcement also signals National’s intent to keep crime and public safety at the centre of its campaign messaging. With Auckland’s transport network entering a new era, the party is betting that voters will welcome a more visible police presence—and reward a government that promises to deliver it.
