The Salvation Army has launched its 2026 Winter Appeal, urging New Zealanders to stand together as child homelessness reaches its highest recorded levels. New research shows more than 33,000 children are living in severe housing deprivation — in cars, garages, overcrowded rooms, and spaces never meant to be homes. In total, more than 112,000 people across Aotearoa now face severe housing insecurity.
For Captain Andrew Wilson of Wellington South Corps, the crisis is no longer hidden. “Too many families and children are facing the heartbreak of homelessness,” he says. “People are being pushed to the brink; choosing between food on the table or a roof over their heads.”
Scripture speaks directly to moments like this. Proverbs 31:8–9 calls God’s people to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… defend the rights of the poor and needy.” The Salvation Army’s appeal is a practical expression of that command — stepping into the gap where families are falling through.
Homelessness among children is often invisible. Tamariki sleep on couches, share cramped rooms, or live in cold, damp spaces that damage health and disrupt schooling. These pressures compound for families already carrying extra challenges.
Jack and Tula*, parents of four, know that pressure well. When their housing options ran out, they moved between friends’ homes until space ran out. Eventually, the family ended up living in their van. With two sons on the autism spectrum, the instability made daily life almost impossible.
Through Salvation Army support, the family has now moved into a four‑bedroom social housing home. “Words cannot describe the relief of having a roof over our heads,” Jack says. “We finally have space to put down roots and start again.”
The impact of stable housing is immeasurable — but thousands more families are still waiting for that same chance.
As winter settles over the country, the Salvation Army is calling on Kiwis to give what they can. In the words of Isaiah 58:7, this is a season to “share your bread with the hungry and provide the poor wanderer with shelter.”
