Shock! Horror! Vandalism Outrages Politicians

Election season always brings drama, but the latest round of billboard vandalism has sparked a bigger question: is this personal, or is it simply politics doing what politics always does? Because if politicians are outraged that their signs are being defaced, they might want to take a number — the rest of the country has been living with vandalism, abuse, and public hostility for years.

Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says the racist slur sprayed across her billboard is more than an attack on her personally — it’s a reminder of how uneven the playing field is. Smaller parties don’t have warehouses full of spare signs or private land to keep them safe. When their boards get hit, they stay hit.

Her “billboard team” is her husband and a handful of volunteers. No corporate machine. No endless replacements. Just grassroots supporters scrubbing off hate speech so the campaign can keep moving.

Ngarewa-Packer says she can handle being defaced — what she can’t ignore is the climate that allows it. She sees a link between the tone of the current Government and the behaviour now showing up on the streets. Whether people agree or not, the question hangs there: is this vandalism a political act, or a symptom of something deeper?

Across the aisle, National MP Ryan Hamilton is dealing with his own billboard graffiti — “fascist”, plus a few choice insults. He’s furious, calling the vandals “cowards” who strike in the dark. He’s not backing down, though. He’s challenging them to front up, talk to him, debate him — anything other than hiding behind a spray can.

Hamilton’s message is simple: disagree with me, fine. But don’t vandalise private property and pretend it’s political courage.

And that’s where the two stories collide.

Two politicians. Two parties. Two very different experiences. But the same question:

Is this targeted political hostility — or just the reality of modern public life?

Because if politicians are shocked that their faces are being tagged, slurred, and spray‑painted, they’re getting a taste of what ordinary New Zealanders deal with every day: vandalised fences, smashed letterboxes, stolen signs, graffiti on shops, and abuse shouted from passing cars.

Maybe it’s not personal. Maybe it’s not even political. Maybe it’s just the country’s temperature — and everyone is feeling the heat.
