Told to ‘Get Pregnant’ No More — New GP Guidelines Target Endometriosis Failures

Just months after cvnznews.com exposed the experiences of New Zealand women being told to “just get pregnant” as a supposed treatment for endometriosis, new national guidelines are finally being rolled out to help GPs diagnose the condition earlier — and with far fewer dismissive detours.

The updated clinical guidance, released this week, is designed to give frontline doctors clearer criteria, faster pathways, and practical tools to identify endometriosis without forcing patients through years of pain, disbelief, or outdated advice. According to reporting from 1News, the guidelines aim to reduce the average diagnostic delay, which currently stretches up to eight years for many women.

For advocates, the move is overdue. For patients, it’s personal.

In our earlier investigation, women described being told their symptoms were “normal”, “in their head”, or solvable by pregnancy — a message that left many feeling dismissed, unheard, and unsupported. The new guidelines directly challenge that culture by emphasising symptom‑based diagnosis rather than relying solely on surgical confirmation, a shift long called for by specialists.

Health leaders say the goal is simple: make it easier for GPs to recognise endometriosis early, reduce suffering, and prevent the condition from escalating into fertility issues, chronic pain, or repeated emergency visits. The guidelines also encourage doctors to take menstrual pain seriously — a change that many patients say would have transformed their lives if implemented sooner.

Endometriosis NZ has welcomed the update but warns that guidelines alone won’t fix the problem. Training, resourcing, and cultural change inside primary care will be essential. Without them, the document risks becoming another well‑intentioned file that never reaches the exam room.

For the thousands of New Zealand women living with endometriosis, the announcement offers hope — but also a reminder of how far the system still has to go. After years of being told to endure, minimise, or “just get pregnant”, they now wait to see whether the health sector will finally listen.
