New Zealand’s tourism sector is continuing its remarkable post‑pandemic resurgence, with new data showing the industry pumping billions more into the economy and supporting thousands of additional jobs nationwide.

The latest Tourism Satellite Account from Stats NZ reports total tourism expenditure of $46.6 billion for the year ending March 2025 — up $1.5 billion (3.3%) on the previous year. International visitors were a major driver, lifting their spending by $1.2 billion (7%) to $18.1 billion, in line with a 4.3% rise in overseas arrivals to 3,320,687 people.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the figures confirm the sector’s growing strength and its importance to New Zealand’s economic momentum.

“Tourism employment increased by 2.8 percent — that’s 8,874 more people — bringing the total to 327,888,” she says. “That means one in nine New Zealanders now works in tourism or hospitality, showing just how vital this industry is to jobs and opportunity across the country.”

Tourism remains New Zealand’s second‑largest export, contributing 7.7 percent of GDP — a level consistent with its long‑standing role as one of the country’s economic pillars.

Upston says the continued growth reflects both the appeal of New Zealand’s landscapes and experiences, and the Government’s focus on making it easier for visitors to come here.

“Whether it’s our natural beauty, warm hospitality or world‑class experiences, people see real value in travelling to New Zealand — and they’re staying longer and exploring more.”

The Government has introduced a $70 million Major Events and Tourism Package, expanded NZeTA access to reduce visa barriers, and invested in attracting more international visitors.

Upston says these measures are already paying dividends.

“Increased visitor spending flows directly into our regions, supports local jobs and creates opportunities for communities and businesses up and down the country.”

She says the message is clear: tourism is central to the Government’s plan to “fix the basics and build the future.”

“New Zealand is open for business, and international visitors are returning to our shores in force — giving a major boost to tourism and hospitality.”
