After Brussels suggested Australia and New Zealand could one day follow Canada into a new category of EU “associate membership”, Australia has poured cold water on immediate speculation while New Zealand says no discussions have taken place. The proposal may signal a changing world order, but for now it remains more vision than policy.

The prospect of New Zealand one day becoming an associate member of the European Union has captured attention following comments from European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, but fresh reactions from Australia and New Zealand suggest the idea remains firmly in the realm of possibility rather than policy.

Earlier this week, Roberta Metsola told Euronews that countries such as Australia and New Zealand could potentially follow Canada into a new form of “associate membership” with the EU, describing it as a middle ground between full membership and a traditional partnership arrangement.

The comments sparked speculation about whether Brussels is seeking to build a broader alliance of like-minded democracies at a time of growing global uncertainty.

However, Australia’s response has been notably cautious.

In comments to Euronews, a spokesperson for the Australian Government said Canberra’s focus remains on completing and ratifying its recently negotiated free-trade agreement with the European Union rather than discussing any form of associate membership.

“The relationship has never been stronger or more important,” the spokesperson said, while stressing the economic benefits of closer trade ties with Europe’s 450 million consumers.

That response suggests Australia sees trade, rather than political integration, as the immediate priority.

New Zealand’s reaction has been even more restrained.

According to comments reported by Reuters, a New Zealand Government spokesperson said there have been no discussions with the European Union about New Zealand becoming an associate member.

That brief statement is the closest Wellington has come to addressing the proposal publicly and indicates that, at least for now, no formal process is underway.

The lack of enthusiasm is perhaps unsurprising. While New Zealand enjoys a close relationship with Europe and recently implemented its own free-trade agreement with the bloc, associate membership raises a host of unanswered questions.

What rights would such members have? Would they be expected to align with EU regulations? Could they influence policy without being full members? And would New Zealanders even want a deeper political relationship with Brussels beyond trade and cooperation?

For now, nobody appears to have those answers.

The idea itself appears to be driven largely by the EU’s desire to strengthen ties with trusted democratic partners. The proposal emerged after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen floated associate membership for Canada amid shifting global trade relationships and growing geopolitical tensions.

The feeling in Brussels may be one of expanding partnerships, but in Canberra and Wellington the mood appears more cautious.

For New Zealand, the notion of standing a little closer to Europe is intriguing. Becoming an EU associate member, however, remains a distant possibility rather than an imminent reality.
