Labour leader Chris Hipkins has called for a dedicated debate on the state of New Zealand’s healthcare system, challenging Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to front up to medical professionals and patients concerned about growing pressures in the sector.

The challenge comes as healthcare continues to emerge as a major political battleground, with concerns over waiting lists, workforce shortages, access to medicines and the overall performance of the health system dominating public discussion.

However, Hipkins’ call has drawn a sharp response from ACT leader David Seymour, who argued that Labour bears significant responsibility for many of the problems now facing the sector. Seymour described Hipkins as “the worst health minister in modern New Zealand history” and accused him of overseeing increased health spending without corresponding improvements in outcomes. He pointed to issues including intensive care capacity and medicine availability as examples of areas where performance has been criticised.

The debate has also revived scrutiny of Labour’s past decisions while in government. Critics have highlighted the former government’s $2.75 million funding of a Mongrel Mob-linked rehabilitation programme, an initiative that Hipkins has since acknowledged was a mistake. Opponents have also pointed to reports that Labour’s Cabinet rejected proposals to stop government funding reaching gangs and gang-affiliated organisations.

Healthcare is likely to remain a central election issue as parties compete to convince voters they have the best plan to improve services while managing costs. With both Labour and the Government accusing each other of failing patients, the call for a dedicated health debate could provide voters with a clearer comparison of their competing visions for the country’s health system.

The topic gained traction on social media following Hipkins’ challenge, with supporters and critics alike weighing in on Labour’s record and the current Government’s handling of the sector.
