Conservative NZ is calling for reforms to New Zealand’s Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Act, arguing the law should protect people from genuine harm without restricting parents, professionals and faith communities from providing legitimate support.

The party says concerns remain about how the legislation is being interpreted, particularly by families worried that ordinary parenting, counselling or healthcare discussions could be misunderstood as unlawful conduct.
Under the policy proposal, Conservative NZ says parents should be free to discuss issues relating to biological sex, wellbeing and medical treatment with their children in an age-appropriate and compassionate manner.
The party argues parents should not be labelled abusive simply because they disagree with a child’s expressed gender identity or wish to seek further advice before supporting a particular social or medical pathway.
Conservative NZ is also seeking stronger legal protections for psychologists, counsellors and healthcare professionals. It says practitioners should be able to use their independent clinical judgment, discuss uncertainty, recommend further assessment and consider a range of factors affecting a young person’s wellbeing without fear of breaching the law.
The proposal emphasises the importance of families having access to a broad range of support options. Alongside professional care, the party highlights the role of healthy routines, sport, hobbies, mentoring and social connections in helping young people develop confidence and resilience.
Freedom of speech, conscience and religious belief are also central to the policy. Conservative NZ says respectful discussion about biological sex, sexuality, medical risks and sincerely held beliefs should remain protected under New Zealand law.
If the legislation remains in place, the party wants amendments that would explicitly protect good-faith parenting, non-coercive counselling, independent clinical assessment, lawful religious expression and the ability of families to seek alternative professional opinions.
The party says there must be a clear distinction between harmful conversion practices and legitimate efforts to understand and support a child.
“Every child deserves compassionate support, and every parent deserves to be heard,” the policy states.
Conservative NZ says its goal is a legal framework that protects children from harm while respecting parental responsibility, professional independence and the freedom of New Zealanders to ask questions, seek advice and discuss difficult issues without fear of legal consequences.
