NASH VS MOTHERHOOD: THE FIGHT HE SHOULD NEVER HAVE PICKED

Stuart Nash didn’t just trip over his own tongue — he detonated his political prospects in full public view. The former Labour minister, freshly rebadged as an NZ First candidate, has now walked away from the campaign after a backlash that grew louder by the hour.

His offence? Calling National’s Napier MP Katie Nimon “lazy” for taking maternity leave — a comment so tone‑deaf it managed to insult working parents, women, and anyone with a functioning moral compass in one hit. In 2026, maternity leave is not controversial. But Nash made it so.

The fallout was immediate. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon publicly ruled out ever having Nash in a government he leads. NZ First leader Winston Peters accepted Nash’s resignation late Wednesday night. And voters in Napier watched yet another political circus unfold in a city already tired of being treated like a battleground rather than a community.

Nash tried to mop up the mess with a late‑night social media post, insisting his words were “open to an interpretation I never intended”. He framed himself as a husband and father of four, including “two strong, independent daughters”, and claimed he respects working parents. But the damage was done — and the apology read more like a political fire blanket than genuine remorse.

He said he simply meant Napier needed an MP who “fought hard for the region”. If that was the point, it was buried under a pile of his own misjudgment. Nash has a long history of controversies, and this latest misfire proved one too many for a party trying to present discipline and stability heading into the election.

In the end, Nash said he didn’t want to be a “significant distraction” to NZ First or the people of Napier. But the distraction was of his own making — a self‑inflicted implosion that reminded voters exactly why political accountability still matters.

Nash didn’t just resign. He removed himself from a race he had already lost the moment he chose to attack a woman for becoming a mother.
