The Conservative Party is accusing both major political blocs of failing to protect New Zealand’s environmental heritage, arguing that short-term economic interests are being prioritised over conservation, democracy and the country’s internationally recognised “clean and green” reputation.

Helen Hougton, Conservatives NZ Political Leader

Conservative Party leader Helen Houghton said New Zealand’s environmental image remains one of its most valuable assets, helping exporters secure premium prices in overseas markets where consumers increasingly value sustainably produced goods.

“The key reasons for having an environmental conscience embrace economic, democracy and the public’s environment,” Houghton said.

She criticised successive governments for what she described as a lack of meaningful action on environmental issues. Houghton pointed to concerns over river and lake water quality, drinking water standards, and the state of several fisheries, claiming environmental promises have often amounted to little more than election rhetoric.

The Conservatives are particularly critical of the coalition government’s resource development policies. Houghton said legislation such as the Fast-track Approvals Act reduces opportunities for public input while accelerating access to natural resources.

She also questioned the stewardship of some fisheries, citing concerns about orange roughy, tarakihi, scallop and crayfish stocks. Houghton argued the country risks sacrificing long-term environmental sustainability for short-term economic returns.

“New Zealand’s land, rivers, fisheries and freedoms are our inheritance, not a resource to be squandered for short-term gain,” she said.

However, supporters of the coalition government’s approach argue that responsible resource development is essential for economic growth, job creation and regional prosperity. Ministers have previously maintained that fast-track processes are designed to reduce costly delays while still requiring environmental safeguards and regulatory oversight.

The government has also argued that increasing investment in infrastructure, mining, fisheries and other industries is necessary to strengthen the economy and improve living standards.

Houghton said neither Labour nor the Greens had provided an effective alternative. She claimed Labour has shown little environmental leadership while the Greens have shifted their focus away from traditional conservation issues.

With the next election approaching, the Conservatives are urging voters to consider smaller parties, arguing they are more willing to challenge what they describe as an increasingly bipartisan approach to the management of New Zealand’s natural resources.
