OPINION: Dale Moreau

Modern psychology can describe your anxiety down to the neurotransmitter. It can trace your patterns to your childhood, your brain chemistry, your attachment wounds. All of that is real. And all of it together still leaves out an entire dimension of what you are.

Let me be clear about what this is not. This is not a swipe at therapy, medication, or the people who provide them. Trauma is real. Brain chemistry is real. The wiring that severe suffering lays down in a nervous system is real, and the researchers who map it have given us knowledge worth having. If you’re seeing a counselor or taking a prescription, nothing here tells you to stop. The problem I want to name isn’t that psychology says false things. It’s what psychology is not allowed to say.

Here’s the issue. The clinical sciences operate on a rule they rarely state out loud: only material things are real. The human person, on that assumption, is a biological machine — genes, neurons, hormones, conditioning. Whatever we call the soul is just the brain doing its thing. This isn’t a discovery the evidence forced on anyone. It’s a starting assumption, inherited from a particular philosophy, and it decides in advance what kinds of explanations are even permitted. Spiritual causes aren’t ruled out because they were investigated and found wanting. They’re ruled out by definition, before the investigation begins.

So, the map psychology hands you is drawn with half the territory missing — not because the other half was explored and found empty, but because the map-makers agreed ahead of time that it couldn’t exist.

The Bible draws the whole map. It presents human beings not as machines and not as souls trapped in bodies, but as something the ancient world would have understood instantly: image-bearers. In the ancient Near East, a king would place a statue of himself — an “image” — in a distant province to mark it as his territory and represent his authority there. Genesis says God placed humans in the world as his images: living representatives, put here to reflect his presence and extend His rule. That’s not a psychological trait you possess. It’s a status. A job. A cosmic vocation.

And the Bible is honest that something went badly wrong with it. The vocation wasn’t erased in the fall; it was hijacked. Human beings kept right on imaging and representing — but now they reflected the powers that the rebellion had handed them over to, instead of the God who made them. The New Testament names those powers without flinching. Paul says our real struggle is “not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness” (Ephesians 6:12). That’s a claim about the actual environment human beings live in — a world quietly contested by forces above the level of any individual’s psychology. It is precisely the claim a naturalistic frame is built to exclude.

Now, a guardrail the Bible itself insists on, and I won’t skip it — this does not mean your depression is a demon or your anxiety is a sin. Scripture is careful here, and so should we be. The Gospels distinguish between people who were sick and people who were oppressed by spirits — they’re listed as different groups. The Bible traces human suffering to many causes and never hands us the lazy rule that every struggle is spiritual warfare in disguise. Reading a demon into every hard day is its own error, and a cruel one. The point is not that the biological and psychological explanations are wrong. The point is that they are partial — one floor of a much taller building.

And here’s where the bigger map does something the smaller one cannot. It changes the diagnosis of who you are when you’re struggling. On the clinical frame, your persistent battles are, at bottom, evidence about you — your defects, your dysfunction, your failure to get it together. The biblical frame says something different and truer: you are an image-bearer living in occupied territory. The resistance you feel toward doing good, the sense that the whole world is tilted against your flourishing — that’s not first of all a verdict on your personal inadequacy. It’s the terrain. You are not uniquely broken. You are a displaced royal representative in a world that has been organized, for a very long time, by powers hostile to everything you were made for.

That reframe lifts a weight the therapist’s office alone often can’t. Real guilt for real wrongs stays real and still needs dealing with — the Gospel handles that fully. But the false guilt, the crushing suspicion that the world’s resistance to you is proof of your worthlessness, gets pulled up by the roots. You stop believing lies about your problems and about God’s heart toward you.

Because the Gospel doesn’t only offer forgiveness, as enormous as that is. It offers a change of address. Paul describes salvation as being “delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred to the kingdom of his beloved Son.” That’s not the language of self-improvement. It’s the language of a prisoner of war being moved out of enemy-held territory and into the country of the rightful King. You are not being coached to cope better inside occupied land. You are being relocated.

So, use the good things the clinical world offers — the counselor, the medication, the hard inner work. They map a real floor of the building and mapping it well matters. Just don’t mistake that floor for the whole structure. You are more than a malfunctioning machine and more than a wounded self. You are an image-bearer, made for a King, being reclaimed by him from powers you were never meant to serve.

Half a map will get you partway. It was never going to be enough, because it was never big enough to hold what you actually are.
