In a week where Kaikōura’s farmers have faced some of the toughest conditions in recent memory, the Government has delivered a welcome dose of good news — and a reminder that rural New Zealand is never left to weather hardship alone. In a very positive move, Agriculture Minister Hon Todd McClay has announced $50,000 in Government support for the Farmers Adverse Events Trust, with Federated Farmers pledging to match the funding through nationwide fundraising efforts. It’s a rare moment of unity and momentum at a time when farmers need it most.

Kaikōura was hammered by double its average July rainfall in just two days, triggering widespread flooding, slips, and damage across farms, feed supplies, and essential infrastructure. Roads, fences, and paddocks have been left scarred by the deluge, and farmers have been working around the clock to protect stock and salvage what they can.

SH1 near Kaikōura likely to remain closed until next week.

Minister McClay says the immediate priority is animal welfare, and teams from the Ministry for Primary Industries are already on the ground. They’re working alongside farmers, sector groups, and the Rural Support Trust to move an estimated 4,000 animals off flood-hit land and onto safe grazing. It’s a massive logistical effort — one that highlights the resilience and coordination of New Zealand’s rural sector.

The Minister also acknowledged that Kaikōura isn’t alone. Farmers in Otago and the Wairarapa are still dealing with the fallout from recent severe weather, and assessments are ongoing to determine whether further support will be required as the full extent of damage becomes clearer.

In the meantime, McClay is urging farmers to stay across MetService forecasts and take precautions, including moving livestock to higher ground where possible. With winter weather still unpredictable, vigilance remains key.

Farmers needing assistance can reach the Rural Support Trust on 0800 787 254, while those with animal welfare concerns can contact MPI on 0800 00 83 33.

In a difficult season, today’s announcement offers something vital — hope, help, and a reminder that rural New Zealand stands together when the waters rise.
