What It Really Means to Apply the Blood of Jesus

For many Christians, “applying the blood of Jesus” is a familiar phrase. But John and Lisa Bevere say its meaning has often been misunderstood.

“When we say we apply the blood, we are drawing on the blood covenant,” Lisa Bevere explained during a recent episode of “Conversations with John & Lisa Bevere.”

Applying the blood is not a mystical ritual or an attempt to bring Christ’s physical blood from heaven to earth. It means declaring by faith what Jesus secured for us through His death, burial and resurrection.

“We’re not talking about some kind of voodoo blood thing,” Lisa said. “We actually understand the power of the blood.”

John Bevere said he declares the blood of Jesus over homes, hotel rooms, churches and other environments. Such declarations rest upon the authority of Christ’s sacrifice and the promises of the new covenant.

“The blood of Jesus still speaks,” he said. “It speaks redemption. It speaks mercy. It speaks freedom. It speaks liberty. It speaks peace.”

Faith Over Feelings

That truth also changes how we approach God. Too many believers allow emotions, shame or the accusations of others to determine whether they feel worthy to enter His presence.

“Don’t go into the presence of God in your prayer closet by how you feel,” John said. “Go into the presence of God because of what Jesus did for you.”

Our confidence does not come from flawless behavior. It comes from Christ’s finished work. When accusations attack our minds, the Beveres encourage us to reject the lies and replace them with Scripture.

“Come against those words and then begin to speak the Word of God, pray the Word of God over your own life,” Lisa said.

Applying the blood means standing upon what Jesus has already accomplished. We stop living at the mercy of our emotions when we allow God’s Word—not our feelings—to define our standing before Him.
