Christopher Luxon walked through Wellington Airport today and refused to answer a single question — not one — ahead of an urgent National Party caucus meeting called for Wednesday morning. When asked, he simply said: “Talk to you tomorrow… take care team.”

Tomorrow might be doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Luxon’s leadership is under fresh scrutiny after weeks of missteps, coalition clashes, and his surprise call for an MMP referendum — a move that blindsided his own caucus. Rumblings of a leadership challenge resurfaced in the New Zealand Herald, and by Tuesday afternoon Luxon had summoned MPs to Wellington for what looks very much like a crisis meeting.

National MPs have gone quiet. Diaries cleared. Interviews cancelled. Even Chris Bishop — often whispered about as a leadership contender — abruptly pulled out of RNZ’s Morning Report. At two separate media events today, Bishop backed Luxon but looked like a man walking through a minefield.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown didn’t help, joking that Bishop would make a “good Prime Minister,” before adding that Defence Minister Chris Penk might also be in the running. Penk, notably, left the event early.

Other MPs insisted they “absolutely” support Luxon, but their tone sounded more like damage control than conviction.

Labour’s Carmel Sepuloni didn’t miss the chance to twist the knife, saying the urgent meeting clearly shows “unrest in the National caucus.”

ACT’s David Seymour stayed diplomatic, calling it “a matter for the National Party.”

So here’s the blunt question:

Could New Zealand wake up tomorrow with a new Prime Minister?

The answer is simple:

If National rolls Luxon in the morning — yes. If they don’t — the speculation only gets louder.

Either way, tomorrow is going to be a very big day in New Zealand politics.
