New Zealand’s long‑running attendance crisis has finally produced a bright spot — and for once, it’s not spin, not theory, and not another round of hand‑wringing. It’s real movement. Associate Education Minister David Seymour has welcomed new data showing more non‑enrolled students (NENs) are being found, supported, and re‑enrolled than at any point since records began. And in a country where too many kids have drifted off the grid, that matters.

Term 2 attendance hit a decade high. That alone is a headline few expected in 2026. But the real story sits underneath: frontline attendance services have been rebuilt, re‑contracted, and properly resourced — and the results are showing up in the numbers.

So far this year, 11,579 NEN cases have been closed, the highest since tracking began in 2016. Even more striking, re‑enrolment cases needing intensive support jumped from 400 in Term 1 to 4,100 in Term 2. That’s not a tweak — that’s a system waking up.

Providers are also identifying more kids who have slipped out of education entirely. 10,716 cases have been opened, again the highest ever recorded. It’s not that more children are disappearing — it’s that the system is finally finding them.

This is the part of the story that matters for families: the new attendance service focuses on individual students, not generic interventions. Barriers are assessed case‑by‑case. Plans are tailored. Schools are working overtime to reintegrate students smoothly, even before additional support funding fully kicks in.

Yes, it’s messy. Yes, schools are carrying more than they should. But Seymour is right about one thing — this is a far better problem than thousands of kids staying invisible, losing another year of learning, confidence, and future opportunity.

Transition hubs and contingency funds are on the way to help schools manage the surge. And the long‑term goal is clear: by 2030, 80% of students attending school more than 90% of the time.

Attendance isn’t just a statistic. It’s the gateway to better learning, better health, higher incomes, and stronger communities. Kids are starting to see the value of showing up — and the system is finally showing up for them too.

A rare good‑news story in education, and one that actually moves the dial.
