New Zealand is celebrating with one of its most beloved sporting champions after Olympic legend Dame Lisa Carrington announced the arrival of her first child, a beautiful baby girl.

The 37-year-old kayaking superstar shared the joyous news on social media, posting a touching video accompanied by Six60’s Rivers. Alongside the video, Carrington wrote the simple but heartfelt words: “Our beautiful baby girl is here. We are completely in love.”

For a nation that has cheered Dame Lisa through some of its greatest sporting moments, this latest milestone feels especially significant. Known for her humility, determination, and quiet excellence, the New Zealand sporting icon has inspired generations through her remarkable achievements on the world stage. Now she begins an exciting new chapter, embracing the adventure of motherhood.

Carrington’s list of accomplishments is extraordinary. Across four Olympic Games she has collected an incredible eight gold medals, making her New Zealand’s most decorated Olympian. Her breathtaking performances in Tokyo and Paris cemented her status as one of the greatest canoe sprint athletes in Olympic history.

Earlier this year, Dame Lisa announced her pregnancy and subsequently confirmed she would miss the 2026 World Championships. At the time, she described pregnancy as a “real learning curve” while expressing gratitude and excitement for the journey ahead.

Yet even as she enjoys precious family time with husband Michael “Bucky” Buck and their newborn daughter, the champion’s competitive spirit remains alive. Carrington has already indicated she is targeting the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, a prospect that will undoubtedly excite sports fans across New Zealand.

For now, however, medals, records, and Olympic glory can wait. The focus is on tiny fingers, sleepless nights, treasured cuddles, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

A grateful nation joins in celebrating this wonderful moment. After years of bringing pride and joy to New Zealand, Dame Lisa Carrington has received a priceless reward of her own.

Congratulations to Dame Lisa, Bucky, and their growing family on the arrival of their precious little girl. ❤️
