A Red Heavy Rain Warning has been issued for coastal Dunedin and Clutha, with residents urged to prepare for potential flooding, road closures, and power outages.
Metservice is advising Otago residents in low-lying coastal areas to expect between 80 and 120 mm of rain. The heavy rainfall is forecast today until 9am on Monday July 6.
Other nearby areas could be impacted too, and snow may complicate the situation. An Orange Heavy Snow Warning is also currently in place for the rest of Otago.
The heaviest rainfalls are likely from late Sunday afternoon until early Monday morning. Intensities of 10 to 15 mm per hour are possible during this time.
This forecast represents a significant amount of rain for Dunedin and the Taieri Plains. It will also affect the areas around Milton and the Clutha Delta.
These conditions could cause rivers to rise, possible slips, and flooding in low-lying areas. Some roads could become impassable, and residents are reminded that floodwaters are highly dangerous.
The Dunedin City Emergency Operations Centre has been activated in response. Otago Regional Council staff are present at the Emergency Coordination Centre to monitor the region’s rivers and the unfolding situation.
Residents are advised to listen to local radio stations and check Emergency Management Otago for any updates. People should act quickly to self-evacuate if they see rising water and are concerned.
