New Zealand’s economic engine is finally humming again, and the latest tourism numbers prove it. June’s international visitor arrivals have surged to 95% of pre‑pandemic levels, a clear sign that the country’s recovery isn’t just underway — it’s accelerating.

Statistics New Zealand figures show 201,900 overseas visitors arrived in June 2026, an 8.1% jump compared with last year. In a global climate where air travel demand actually dipped — IATA reports a 1.7% decline worldwide — New Zealand is defying gravity. That’s not luck. That’s momentum.

Tourism Minister Louise Upston says the results show “just how far the sector has come,” with New Zealand now firmly on track to double the value of tourism exports by 2034. After years of turbulence, the sector is once again pulling its weight as one of the country’s most powerful economic drivers.

The growth is broad and balanced. China continues its strong rebound, delivering 14,300 visitors, up 27% on last June. Australia remains the heavyweight, sending 108,200 travellers, a 14% lift as Kiwis’ closest neighbours keep choosing New Zealand for winter escapes, adventure holidays, and family trips.

Across the full year ending June 2026, New Zealand welcomed 3,674,600 visitors, an increase of 299,300 — a solid 9% annual rise. That’s not a seasonal spike. It’s sustained recovery.

Behind the numbers is a sector that refused to quit. Tourism and hospitality operators — from small family‑run lodges to major adventure brands — have rebuilt with grit, innovation, and a renewed focus on quality experiences. Their work is paying off. Visitors are returning, spending is rising, and confidence is flowing back into regional economies that rely on tourism to thrive.

Despite global uncertainty, travellers continue to choose New Zealand. They’re choosing its safety, its landscapes, its culture, and the world‑class experiences delivered by operators who’ve fought hard to get back on their feet.

The message is unmistakable: New Zealand’s tourism recovery isn’t just real — it’s becoming one of the strongest economic turnaround stories of 2026.
